Printed on laid paper with watermark VAN GELDER ZONEN, as published in Lithography and Lithographers by Joseph Pennell. From either the 1898 or 1908 edition, all impressions having been printed probably in 1897. The stone was effaced in Nov. 1903.
Pennell (1857-1926) Major American etcher who wrote and illustrated many books. He traveled through Europe and America as sort of an artist journalist. Late in Whistler’s life, Pennell became his best friend, to whom Whistler left all his etching tools. Whistler made three lithographic portraits of Pennell, of which this is the best.
