Charles Meryon (1821-1868) A portrait of the artist at age 32. One of the greatest of all French etchers, had a tremendous influence on all architectural etchers to follow. His work is imbibed with a Romantic fantasy. He was confined in an asylum after his mental condition deteriorated, where he was treated by Dr. Gachet, who also attended to Van Gogh.
One of two portraits of Meryon etched by Bracquemond, the original plate for this portrait was damaged after only 10 proofs were printed. For this Gazette des Beaux Arts edition, a heliogravure plate was made in place of the lost original.
