Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) A portrait of the artist at age 58. His large canvases in flat, pale color were in imitation of fresco. He decorated many official buildings in France, most notably the Pantheon, Paris. His subjects were allegorical and symbolic figurative works.
