A portrait of the artist at age 38. Gavarni, whose real name was Sulpice Chevalier,was one of the great draughtsmen of 19th century France. Gavarniís best known works are in lithography, mostly published in French newspapers and periodicals, as were those of Daumier. He executed over 4,000 works, some of which were translated into wood and steel engravings.
